I've been surprised by the number of excellent beginner crochet kits that've been emerging lately. Although amigurumi kits are pretty common as a starting point for new crocheters, it's rarer to find a kit with instructions and materials for more practical projects. Granny square kits are even more uncommon, despite this being a fairly common technique for crocheters. The fact that this kit offers both a practical project AND uses granny squares automatically bumps it up a few points in my book. That said, I tend to review these beginner kits on a few different points:1) Is the kit actually suitable for beginners? My main considerations are the quality of the instructions and whether there's enough material to allow for a few mistakes along the way.2) Are the materials of an acceptable quality? I don't expect a kit for beginners to include high-end yarn, but everything should at least be as good as the cheap options available in big box stores.3) Is there any value for experienced crocheters? Although not necessary, it's nice when a beginner's kit offers tools or materials that an experienced crocheter might find useful, even if they don't intend to use them for the intended project. So, how does this kit stack up?First, there's more than enough yarn to complete the scarf hood as designed, likely with a few scraps leftover. Even if you've never touched a crochet hook before and make numerous mistakes, you shouldn't run out of yarn before finishing the project. The instructions are somewhere between a B+ and an A-. The included booklet isn't the most well-written guide I've ever encountered, but it includes plenty of pictures and has enough detail to help a beginner get started. The materials also seem extremely nice. The included cotton-blend yarn is soft and comfortable, and generally seems better than typical value-priced yarn found at big box stores. The tools are also a slight step above those found in most of these kits, which was a nice surprise. Even better, the kit includes a small plastic pom pom maker. All of which leads me to my third question: is there any value here for experienced crocheters? The answer is... maybe. You get a surprisingly large amount of high-quality yarn in multiple colors, a comfortable crochet hook, and a cute little pom pom maker. At this price point, I don't recommend this kit for those materials alone, but it's not a bad value if you think this is a project you want to undertake. As a beginner's kit, this is an easy five-star product. Solid instructions, great materials, useful tools, and a project that's pretty unique compared to most beginner's crochet kits. What's not to love?
